HAPPY DAY TO YOU: The picture of a boxing contest came to my mind as I was about to write this devotion. The boxers hammered each other hard and tough until one of them fell down and was unable to get up at the count of three by the referee. I see the Word of God as Spirit “The Spirit is the One who gives life. The flesh doesn’t help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.” ‭‭John‬ ‭6‬:‭63‬ ‭HCSB‬‬. The word of life is in my heart. The word of the principalities too are spirits. They are in my heart as well and I am familiar with them because the world understands them as they are perceived with my five senses. I am to stand firm on the word of God and obey whatever the word of God instructs me to do. I stand on the word of God by saying it to myself until the word of the spirits falls down flat. I know this by the joy and peace I receive even if the physical circumstance has not changed. Jesus showed us the example when he was tempted by the devil. He hit him with “It is written…”. The first step to hold a thought captive is to know the thought that limits you from obeying Christ to do what is right. The next step is to know one but preferably two scriptures that give God’s mind about your desire. Then once the limiting thought comes up, you address it with “it is written…” or you personalize the scripture to yourself. Do you have to quote the bible verse? No, but you need to know the scripture correctly.

This is what happens as you fight to… “pull down strongholds, cast down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, …” 2 Corinthians 10:3-6 You will feel the battle in your mind. As the wicked thought prevails, you become fearful but when the word of God prevails, you have peace and courage. When the word of God has beaten the principalities and powers, you experience peace, joy and rest even when your physical appearance has not changed. This is how to hold every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. You take a firm stand for the word of Christ and do not submit to slavery to any other thought until the word of Christ prevails.

Today’s Exercise: Dear Lord, thank you for showing me that spiritual warfare is like a boxing context. Help me to keep to the side of your word. Say to yourself ten times and as often as you can “I stand firm in the liberty I have in the word of God and refuse to surrender no matter the situation until the word prevails”.
