antidote to depression 2
“For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it.” Romans 8:24-25 NASB1995
GOOD DAY: At the root of depression is deferred hope. It could come from something as simple as a failed hope to be able to feed your family. When it becomes prolonged and you don’t see a way out, depression can set in. Many parents abrogate their duties out of depression not because they are wicked.
First, how does hope work in a simple language? Hope is to see for yourself what others cannot see, it is your expectation, or what you are aspiring for that makes you pursue a cause you believe will take you there. It is your answer to WHY you do what you do. For example, if you ask a gym rat why she goes to the gym, he will probably say to keep my weight in control and be fit. If his weight remains the same and he doesn’t look as he desires, he will get frustrated and that can lead to depression.
Hope comes from a promise from a person or source. It can come from a promise from God, the world or from self. Hope will be tested as it is delayed. It is at the point of testing or delay that frustration comes that can lead to depression. King Solomon put it clearly when he said ‘“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, But desire fulfilled is a tree of life.”’ Proverbs 13:12 NASB1995. So depression is not something that God does not know about. Tomorrow, we’ll see the three sources of hope and how we can navigate life at different stages of hope. Life or living is based on hope. Think on this today and analyze where your hope comes from so that tomorrow you will know how to hope and when you can hope against hope.
PRAY: Dear Lord, open my mind to know exactly the root of my hope.
