DEALING WITH UNCERTAINTIES
Then Moses said to the Lord, “Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither recently nor in time past, nor since You have spoken to Your servant; for I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.” The Lord said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes him mute or deaf, or seeing or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now then go, and I, even I, will be with your mouth, and teach you what you are to say.” But he said, “Please, Lord, now send the message by whomever You will.” Exodus 4:10-13 NASB1995
GOOD DAY: We have seen so many prophecies from men of God that have not come to pass. I have been asked by several people if God really speaks or if He spoke to those who profess to be speaking His mind. My response has always been YES and NO. Yes: God speaks to men now but No in that He may not be the one speaking to whoever claims to be speaking for Him. Moses in dealing with His uncertainties asked God questions. God answered him and gave him a sign that Moses could identify with. Moses was even in a better position than we are now. God spoke to him face to face as friends yet he had his doubts. “Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, just as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses returned to the camp, his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.” Exodus 33:11 NASB1995
But we don’t have that kind of relationship with God now so we have a lot of uncertainties. God spoke to Gideon and Gideon asked for confirmation. Gideon’s relationship with God wasn’t like Moses’. Gideon asked for a sign in the way he would understand thus:
“The Lord looked at him and said, “Go in this your strength and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian. Have I not sent you?” He said to Him, “O Lord, how shall I deliver Israel? Behold, my family is the least in Manasseh, and I am the youngest in my father’s house.” But the Lord said to him, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat Midian as one man.” So Gideon said to Him, “If now I have found favor in Your sight, then show me a sign that it is You who speak with me.” Judges 6:14-17 NASB1995
You can read the full story in Judges chapter 6. There are many other times in the bible when the men asked God for signs that He was the one talking to them.
In times of uncertainty, don’t just take a scripture that jumps out to you or an inspiration in your heart that it is God. Stay back a bit and ask God for a sign that you will understand so that you will be certain. This is not lack of faith but proof of your faith that God exists and you wish to please Him. We shall look into how uncertainties were dealt with in the New Testament when the Holy Spirit started living in believers.
PRAY: Dear Lord, please answer me in the language I will understand when I ask for clarification of your instructions to me.
