October 22.    Matthew ch 27-28

DYNAMICS OF LISTENING TO AND OBEYING GOD 1

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.” John 14:26 NASB1995

GOOD DAY: I have had questions about obeying some literal commandments of the Old Testament and true, obeying some as they are will land someone in jail or earn a death sentence. So how do we hear God or listen to Him that we may acquire wisdom? The Old Testament times are times of the letter. The letter kills but the spirit gives life. “Not that we are adequate in ourselves to consider anything as coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God, who also made us adequate as servants of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.” 2 Corinthians 3:5-6 NASB1995  Now that we are serve God under a new covenant of the spirit, it is by the spirit that we listen to God and not by the letters. The Holy Spirit talks to our minds as to what Christ will have us do. The spirit of the New Testament is LOVE. The whole of the Old Testament laws are reduced to one with two forks. “…to love Him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbour as himself, is much more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”” Mark 12:33 NASB1995

So all the laws of the Old Testament have been reduced to Love. We now have to be able to define Love. Love is one word that has been so misused that some people even swear never to love again. The love people talk about is the romantic love that has been abused. The Love of God that Jesus talked about is quite different. Romantic love that we are familiar with is the kind that awakens the sexual desire for a person of the opposite sex. That is not the kind of love we should have for God and our neighbour whether opposite or same sex. Tomorrow by God’s grace, we shall talk of the Love that we should have for God and our neighbour. Remember: GOD IS LOVE.
