HAPPY DAY TO YOU: Someone asked me a question saying “If I ask for something consistently and think of it till I can see it in the virtual realm and all my attention goes towards it and it consumes me, is that a graven image?”
I see it this way; there are the essentials to healthy living and there is the excessive desire that consumes a person. When essential is required and prayed for till you see it with conviction that you have it, that is not a graven image. Seeing it in the virtual realm gives you a joy that bursts into thanksgiving. For example, you pray for money to pay school fees and meet your normal responsibilities, then your mind returns to it and it stays in your imagination till you have the assurance that it is done. That is not a graven image. WHEN YOUR NEED (ESSENTIAL) BECOMES A WANT (LUST,GREED, COVETOUSNESS), THAT CONSUMES YOU, THEN IT BECOMES A GRAVEN IMAGE. Your family needs one car to function properly, but you begin to retain the image of four cars of different types, then your desire becomes a graven image as it removes your peace of mind when you don’t have it and even when you do, you labour to still have more to the extent that it defines your life. That is a graven image. Check whether your desire is an essential or a graven image. The power at work within you will work out your desire but need gives you peace and rest keeping your focus on God while graven image gives you no rest at all.
Today’s Exercise: Look at your desires today and separate essentials from graven images. Say to yourself ten times today and as often as a graven image comes to your mind “I serve the Lord my God with the whole of me and no other desire fills my mind to take His place.”

*This is a dicey situation to find oneself, not differentiating between essentials and wants. You can be so consumed by your longings that things that really matter to your overall well-being are relegated to the back-burner, and then your real suffering starts. May the Holy Spirit indwelling us help us to choose rightly in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen!!!*
