OVERCOMING ADULTERY

“Some time later, his master’s wife became attracted to Joseph and said, “Sleep with me.” He refused and said to his master’s wife, “With me here, my master doesn’t pay attention to anything in his household; he’s put everything he has under my supervision. No one is greater than I am in this household, and he hasn’t denied me anything except you, since you are his wife. How could I do this terrible thing and sin against God?” Every single day she tried to convince him, but he wouldn’t agree to sleep with her or even to be with her. One day when Joseph arrived at the house to do his work, none of the household’s men were there. She grabbed his garment, saying, “Lie down with me.” But he left his garment in her hands and ran outside.” Genesis 39:7-12 CEB

HAPPY DAY TO YOU: Most adults battle with the sin of adultery and most people I have spoken with either jokingly or in serious counselling sessions agree they don’t like it and will want to overcome it. It is only after they have tried and failed several times that they become frustrated and stop trying to end adultery. In actual fact, no one is completely at peace with breaking any of the interpersonal or moral commandments but man can just not help himself. 

God made a plan for man to overcome sin by surrendering the control of one’s life to Jesus. Once this is done, the way to stay above the sting of sin is like what Joseph did: 

1. Sin will always come to attract you and ask you to play with it. 
2. You recount to the sin how God has made you His child in Jesus Christ and the peace and joy you now have and tell sin how much you value God that you cannot offend Him. 
3. You avoid every occasion that can make you fall into sin. 
4. If you unavoidably find yourself in a position where temptation is high, then you run out of the place. 

These actions are to be taken both in your thoughts and physically as required. You are to flee from sinful thoughts. Don’t dwell on them at all. That is how you cooperate with the Holy Spirit to avoid sinning. The Holy Spirit gives you the power to take the four steps that we highlighted above. 

Today’s Exercise: Thank You Lord for teaching me how to cooperate with Your Spirit to avoid sin. Help me to flee from unwholesome thoughts always. Say to yourself ten times today and anytime your mind is not gainfully engaged; I set my mind to think pure and godly thoughts always. I run away from sinful thoughts in my mind.
