PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITY (Fifth Commandment)

“Train up a child in the way he should go [teaching him to seek God’s wisdom and will for his abilities and talents], Even when he is old he will not depart from it. [Eph 6:4; 2 Tim 3:15]” Proverbs 22:6 AMP

HAPPY DAY TO YOU: It is a great privilege to be a parent either to your own biological children or adopted ones or step children or even those around you. I congratulate everyone that takes on the role of parenting. Good as parenting could be however, it comes with a great responsibility. You have to train the child in a way he should go. Training a child involves both in word and in action with prayers. Children learn more by copying what they see from their parents. I have read a lot of write ups from heads of schools calling on parents to train their children from home and not expect the teachers alone to clean up badly raised children from home.

Jesus Christ revealed God to mankind as FATHER. This tells a lot about what parenting should be. The first impression of God that a child will have is from fathers or the home in general. Whatever a child sees the father doing, he too does. Listen to Jesus: “Jesus responded to the Jewish leaders, “I assure you that the Son can’t do anything by himself except what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise.” John 5:19 CEB. Can you now appreciate the importance of parenting? Mothers too are to train their children. Apostle Paul said this of Timothy “I’m reminded of your authentic faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice. I’m sure that this faith is also inside you.” 2 Timothy 1:5 CEB.  Grandmothers, and mothers too leave a mark in the children’s characters. In the original Yoruba culture for example, children are raised by all parents in the neighbourhood. The ideals of the community are carried through life by their children. The foundation of a good society is in the quality of parenting. This is why it is the first of the interpersonal commandments of the Ten Commandments. Wherever you are as a parent, let the children around you see godliness.

Today’s Exercise: Thank you Lord for showing me that I am a parent to every child around me. Every display of bad character and values is a lesson I pass on to the next generation. Teach me to pass down Your honor to children around me. Say to yourself ten times and any time you see a child â€śI choose to be a godly role model to those around me today”.
