““Honor (respect, obey, care for) your father and your mother, so that your days may be prolonged in the land the Lord your God gives you.” Exodus 20:12 AMP

HAPPY DAY TO YOU: We come to the fifth commandment today, the only commandment with a promise. This also is the beginning of interpersonal instructions for peaceful living. When we were young, we were taught to respect anyone old enough to be a parent. Then, our society had peace and people long enjoyed any position where God put them. The reason why anybody old enough to be your parent was to be honoured is that not only a child’s parents trained him. Every adult in the area collectively trained the child. Later, I saw the Bible extend respect for parents to the elderly as well: “You must rise in the presence of an old person and respect the elderly. You must fear your God; I am the LORD.” Leviticus 19:32 CEB Respect for the elderly is part of the fear of God. If God puts you in a good land or position and you choose not to honour your parents and elders, you stand the chance of not retaining the good state.
The bible is balanced with instruction for parents as well.
“Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger [do not exasperate them to the point of resentment with demands that are trivial or unreasonable or humiliating or abusive; nor by showing favoritism or indifference to any of them], but bring them up [tenderly, with lovingkindness] in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” Ephesians 6:4 AMP
Parents and elders should treat the young ones with love and not be bullied or manipulated in any way. They are to be instructed in the way of the Lord.
Lack of godly parenting is what has led to unsettled societies all over the world. A person’s life is a showcase of the kind of parenting and environment from which he comes. Parents and elders in the society should train children in the way of the Lord.
Today’s Exercise: For a better tomorrow, children must be trained in the way of the Lord. Help me Lord to know your way so that I may mirror you to the younger generation. Say to yourself ten times today “I will lead and teach any child that is in my bubble of influence in the way of the Lord”.
