UNDERSTANDING FREEDOM

August 24. Jeremiah ch 34-36
NO SLAVE MASTER LETS GO EASILY. FREEDOM HAS A PRICE. (1)
And afterward Moses and Aaron came and said to Pharaoh, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Let My people go that they may celebrate a feast to Me in the wilderness.’ ” But Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, and besides, I will not let Israel go.”
Exodus 5:1-2 NASB1995
GOOD DAY. The cry and struggle for freedom is sounding all over the world now. Congregations are seeking freedom from their spiritual masters; nations are struggling and demanding for freedom from their former colonial masters; wives are seeking freedom from their oppressive husbands and vice versa etc etc. No master wants to let go of any slave because of the benefits of service or profit that they will lose. For this reason, freedom has a price. To free mankind from the grip of Satan to which we put ourselves in Eden, even God had to pay a price. He gave His son Jesus Christ to die on the cross.
The first price you have to prepare for is the loss of whatever ‘benefit’ that you were enjoying as a slave. See the experience of the children of Israel: Then they set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the sons of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departure from the land of Egypt. The whole congregation of the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. The sons of Israel said to them, “Would that we had died by the Lord’s hand in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat, when we ate bread to the full; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”
Exodus 16:1-3 NASB1995
They missed the meat and bread that they had in Egypt. They wanted to go back. Are you willing to suffer the lack of the benefits that the slave master gives? If not, don’t bother about asking for freedom. National leaders seeking freedom from colonial masters should intimate their people with what they will lose initially before things settle down. The wife looking for freedom from the husband or vice versa should look at the price of living without the benefits the marriage has provided. The congregation looking for freedom from their shepherd should consider the pain of living without the benefits the church provides. There is nothing bad in seeking for freedom but all implications must be considered before taking the step. A time will come when every slave will want to be free from the yoke of slavery. We shall go on with this tomorrow.
PRAY: Dear Lord, as the wind of freedom is blowing all over the world, grant that we will seek Your face and not depend on our human strength and understanding.
