October 29.           Luke ch 1-2

GOD AND MONEY

  …“and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain. But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.” 1 Timothy 6:5-8 NIV

GOOD DAY: Definitely, God wants us to gain but He warns us to beware of greed. There is actually a thin line between greed and contentment. God’s standard is simply this: “A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God,”. Ecclesiastes 2:24 NIV 

King Solomon the wisest and richest king recorded said the above about wealth. To enjoy whatever wealth a man acquires is a gift from God so God is not against wealth but He warns about the effect amassing or great desire for it can have on a person. Listen to what wealth can do in a man’s life said by Jesus Himself in the parable of the sower:

“Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful.” Mark 4:18-19 NIV

WEALTH IS DECEITFUL. IT IS NOT THE SAME AS GODLINESS AND CAN SHIFT A MAN’S FOCUS FROM GOD. In the hall of faith in Hebrews chapter 11, Solomon, exceedingly wealthy as he was, was not mentioned among the heroes of faith. This should pose a question to those advocating and brandishing the gospel of possessions as faith. When God is counting those who have faith, will men of super abundant wealth be mentioned? Think about this. Having enough to eat and drink and somewhere to lay your head, be content and not set your mind on worldly wealth that is deceitful. A man can be poor but primed to set his heart on possession that he is always seeking it. Such a man is the same as the one who has physical wealth with his heart set on it. If you just have enough to eat and drink, give thanks to God and not allow your mind to be set on acquisition of wealth to the extent of losing your soul. 

PRAY: “Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.” Proverbs 30:8-9 NIV
