“Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.” Exodus 20:4

HAPPY DAY TO YOU: This second commandment of not making any graven image for worship is one controversial and difficult to understand pronouncement. The Catholic Church uses images of saints and Jesus Himself as objects to aid in worship. I am a catholic and a lover of Jesus Christ. Like Job, I have had all and lost all before in a way that was enough to shift my love from Jesus and curse Him. But looking at the saints who went through worse things and stood steadfast, kept my soul fixed on Jesus. That made me look deeply into what God desires from this commandment. I found this to be the base line: DO NOT FORGET OR DENY GOD NO MATTER WHAT YOU BECOME. Both wealth or pleasure and calamities have a way of shifting one’s focus from God. God summarises it thus:“otherwise, when you have eaten and are satisfied, and have built good houses and lived in them, and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and gold multiply, and all that you have multiplies, then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God… Otherwise, you may say in your heart, ‘My power and the strength of my hand made me this wealth.’ But you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, …” Deuteronomy 8:12-14, 17-18 NASB1995

Here, God clearly states His purpose for man; his focus must be on God. With the life, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, man’s main focus should be on Jesus to guide us to eternity with God.

We see today that money (mammon) has become a graven image that has shifted man’s heart from God. It is not the image of saints but the image of mammon in all its forms that is the graven image of this dispensation. Man that is captive of mammon sacrifices anything on its altar. In short, anything you worship more than God is a “graven image.” Cars, clothes, sports, even our jobs are dangerous things to worship because they can go away. But God will never go away, and that’s why it’s best for us to only worship Him. The question is, what image do you carry in your heart and where does it point you to? To Jesus or to itself? That is the decision you have to make and the essence of the second commandment. Check the image in your heart today.

Today’s Exercise: My heart and affection must be for God alone. Jesus is the full image of God to man. Have you encountered Him so He is the only image in your heart? Say to yourself ten times today and as often as you remember “I desire and have an encounter with Jesus today that stamps Him indelibly in my heart”.
