CHRISTIAN MEDITATION

📖

“I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” Psalms 119:11 NLT

📖

HAPPY DAY TO YOU: Christian meditation is a deliberate act to hide the word of God in our heart so that we will not sin against God. It is different from committing scriptures to memory. While committing scriptures to memory makes us store scripture in the brain for recall, meditation brings out the power and wisdom locked in scriptures. I remember when we were young, we would swallow whole groundnuts and it would hide in our digestive tract until we were ready to go to the toilet. The nuts would come out as they went in. They passed through our body but did us no good. That is the closest description I can give memorisation. You take in the scripture and pull it out at will. This is why we have many people who can quote scriptures but its effect does not show in their lives.

In Christian meditation however, you take scripture or scriptural precept and keep chewing it like you chew food. You do this by saying it silently to yourself. You self talk with it. As you keep saying it to yourself, understanding keeps coming to you as the word enters your heart. The word keeps expanding the more you chew it. “The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple.” Psalms 119:130 NKJV  You chew the word until it enters your heart and gives you understanding. As one author puts it:

Scripture doesn’t advise visualization exercises, breathing techniques, or special body postures. But to muse on the words of scripture, to repeat and speak them to yourself, embedding them in your mind so that your head can teach your heart truth: This is normal and a very good idea. This is biblical meditation.

Chewing “seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness” opened up the bad intentions in my heart that needed to change. That was how I overcame anger, worry, grief, fear and my mind became clear of unprofitable baggage. As I repeated it to myself for months, each ungodliness in me was exposed and I repented and the Holy Spirit helped me to see any appearance of them and  say “NO” to them. Try meditating in any scripture that you choose and see how it unfolds.

Today’s Exercise: Thank You Lord for shining Your light in my heart as I meditate on Your word. Say to yourself ten times and as often as you possible “God’s word enters my heart as I speak it to myself and sheds light to my path”.
