DRAW NEAR TO GOD AND RESIST THE DEVIL

“Therefore, submit to God. But resist the Devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, sinners, and purify your hearts, double-minded people!” James 4:7-8 HCSB

HAPPY DAY TO YOU: Most people would want to have nothing to do with the Devil if only because the way following him messes up people’s lives. However, we don’t understand how to flee from or resist him. When a man in a very high position was caught to have embezzled so much money, he blamed it on the Devil. So how do we recognise the Devil? And how do I flee from or resist him? 

The Devil is not a physical personality. He is a spirit so you can’t see him as to flee from him. He comes in the form of thoughts into your mind. How can you know whether a thought is from the Devil? For a Christian, any thought that opposes or misrepresents  scriptures is from the Devil no matter how promising it sounds. Reject and drop such thoughts immediately. Next, which is an acid test is are you able to say it openly? Once you cannot talk about your thoughts without feeling ashamed, then it is evil, drop it. “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.” Ephesians 5:11–12 KJV

Any thought that benefits “I, me, mine” alone is evil. This is the Devil’s thought pattern. 

““How you are fallen from heaven, O shining star, son of the morning! You have been thrown down to the earth, you who destroyed the nations of the world. For you said to yourself, ‘I will ascend to heaven and set my throne above God’s stars. I will preside on the mountain of the gods far away in the north. I will climb to the highest heavens and be like the Most High.’ Instead, you will be brought down to the place of the dead, down to its lowest depths.”  Isaiah 14:12–15 NLT  Run away or don’t consider ideas that follow such a pattern. The thoughts will keep coming and you resist them with what scripture says or say like Joseph said when under temptation by Portipha’s wife in Genesis 39:7-9. Tomorrow, we shall consider Drawing near to God.

Today’s Exercise: Thank you Lord for teaching me how to filter my thoughts so I don’t fall into the Devil’s trap. Help me to flee any appearance of the Devil. Say to yourself ten times today and as soon as possible “I will abstain from any thought that is shameful or self centred”.
