HEARING AND LISTENING

âWhile he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, âThis is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased and delighted! Listen to Him!â [Ps 2:7; Is 42:1]â Matthew 17:5 AMP
ââŚThis is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.â Matthew 17:5b KJV

HAPPY DAY TO YOU: A woman complained that her husband wasnât listening to her but the husband said I always hear her when she talks. I asked the wife if the husband was right and she said yes. Why then do you say he is not listening to you? She said he doesnât act on what she says. Then it struck me that my daughter once complained that I was not listening to her. The same thing a friendâs son said to her and if I have to go into details of the discussions the space permitted is not sufficient. However, I saw that twice, God called Jesus His beloved Son in whom He delights and asked us to hear Him. Jesus said âââSo pay attention to how you hear. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what they think they understand will be taken away from them.âââ Luke 8:18 NLT  Jesus taught a lesson on hearing and listening. I checked the difference between hearing and listening to what Jesus was saying as this determines how much understanding one would be given. The key difference between “hear” and “listen” lies in the level of engagement. Hearing is a passive, involuntary process where sound waves are received by the ear and sent to the brain. Listening, on the other hand, is an active, conscious process where attention is paid to the sound, and meaning is extracted from it.Â
Hearing is just sound entering the brain from the ear and that is it. It is what is referred to as it enters by the right ear and goes out by the left. Listening on the other hand is âhearingâ with attention. Listening makes you hold what you hear in your mind until understanding comes. The longer you hold it, the more understanding you get. This eventually leads to faith. Romans 10:17. When you read or hear the word of God casually without attention and engaging with it, it profits nothing as understanding will not be given to you. Today, check how you hear the word of God; are you just hearing or listening? Tomorrow, we shall practice listening to the word of God.

Todayâs Exercise: Thank You Lord for making me conscious of the difference between hearing and listening. Help me to listen to You. Say to yourself ten times and as often as you can âI hear the word of God with all my attention every timeâ.
