LISTENING TO GOD

“Joseph, to whom she was engaged, was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly. As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 1:19-20 NLT

HAPPY DAY TO YOU: We are going to practice listening to God. We will use Joseph the husband of Mary as our model. Have your pen and journal with you. I also use my phone’s sound recorder if God responds where I can’t write. Now let us start.
1. Joseph was a righteous man meaning a man who tried to follow God’s law. Is it your will to do what pleases God?
2. Write out what you want God to address in your life. It may be your finances, health, inspiration, business, family or anything whatsoever.
3. Write out God’s word concerning what you want God to speak to you about. What Joseph did not want to violate is Deuteronomy 20:21 that says a woman not a virgin on wedding night should be stoned to death.
4. Say a short prayer like “ Lord please talk to me” and start considering the scripture. Say it to yourself until it starts unfolding in your mind. As you say it, write down or record what comes to your heart. Don’t consider your condition and its consequences. It is going to be tough at first but as you keep your mind on the scripture, it becomes easier to do until the word speaks to you. Caution: whatever you consider speaks to you.
5. When the word speaks to you, you will have a conviction that makes you know you are right. It may be in a dream like Joseph or an inner knowing that gives you peace and joy. This is the principle. Tomorrow, we will take specific scriptures to have practical lessons. Today, become aware of what you consider in your mind. The predominant thought in your mind. Write it down and look for scriptures that address it.

Today’s Exercise: Thank you Lord that hearing you can be practiced in simple ways I can understand. Please help me to hold your word and not my condition in my heart. Say to yourself ten times and as often as you can “My soul settles on God at all times and He leads in what to do”.
