THE FACE AND THE MIRROR

“But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like.” James 1:22–24 NLT

HAPPY DAY TO YOU: Good as reading the bible or listening to sermons could be, it could be of no profit if you do not understand how to use what you read and hear to solve your real life problems. People are getting disillusioned about God because the teachings are sweet to the ears in church but how to use them to ease life’s difficulties is the problem.

Jesus used what we know to teach us that which we do not know.First before reading scriptures or listening to teachings, say this short prayer asking the Holy Spirit: “Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions.” Psalms 119:18 NLT Once you say this prayer, read or listen with attention. Jesus used many natural things we are familiar with to teach spiritual truths so that we can understand how to do what He taught. While talking to Nichodemus, Jesus said “If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?” John 3:12 NASB1995 If you consider looking at yourself in the mirror and the way you amend whatever you need to on your face at the moment then forget what you look like, it gives a picture of how you feel excited or sad when you hear the word, decide to change and you forget what you learned once you leave the place of the encounter. What you heard is of no use to you. Today, pay close attention to how you look at yourself in the mirror and compare it to how you listen to the word of God. How are they similar or different?

Today’s Exercise: Thank You Lord for teaching me that Your word can be compared to a mirror. It is a mirror for my soul. Help me to keep Your word in my soul always that I might do it.
