DESIRE AND EFFORT MIXED WITH MERCY PRODUCE SUCCESS

For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy. Romans 9:15-16 NIV

HAPPY DAY TO YOU: “Lord, have mercy on me.” This was the prayer of a lady whose stay in a foreign country expired and it was not renewed. The menial job she was doing abroad provided the funds to keep her elderly parents back at home. Then the immigration officers caught up with her and she was charged to court for deportation orders. She prayed earnestly to God for mercy.
At the court, without a lawyer, she pleaded guilty but asked the judge for mercy. She narrated the condition of her elderly parents at home and how they depended on her. The judge asked her a few questions, pardoned her and she was permitted to stay on.

Desire and all necessary efforts can only take you to a point and not further. If you have desired and laboured for that desire and nothing seems to work, you need God’s mercy. Mercy and goodness work together. It is of the mercy of God that we are not consumed. Mercy chooses pardon over punishment, it chooses to show and exercise compassion. Mercy makes perfect that which is not.
Desire and effort make a person proud but mercy shows humility. It is the humble that seeks and appreciates the work of mercy in every successful endeavour. We shall look into mercy for some days to see how dependent we are on the mercy of God.
